An important aspect of learning how to train your dog is effective use of praise and rewards. Using positive reinforcement must be immediate and consistent.

You should always praise your pet when they adhere to your commands. This positive reinforcement encourages more of this desired response. If you do not continually praise your dog, he or she will eventually lose interest and enthusiasm for properly responding to your commands.

When you consistently and immediately give praise, caresses and rewards for proper completion of your commands your pet quickly learns that your commands are fun and always gets him an enjoyable response from you.

In addition to using praise and rewards, it is important to use repetition of the training to create habits of action and thinking in your dog. Keep your training sessions short and make sure that all praise and corrections are done immediately after the dog’s action so the dog easily associates the two events. Remember that dogs generally have very short attention spans.
